Mini-synopsis: After his mother dies, Ben Hawkins hasn't got a soul left in the world. John Law and the bank are even coming for his home before he his mother's even cold in her grave. He hasn't even gotten halfway done with a respectable burial when a group of carnies comes by. Moved to see what this young man has in him (and to see whether Samson or Jonesy will win the bet on whether the bulldozer will run him over), Jonesy gets the carnival folks to help with the funeral. They're set to leave as the bulldozer destroys the house and Ben collapses. When he comes to himself again, he has to decide: does he go back to try to take back his home, or stay with the carnival and see what fate has in store?

  • When Sofie reads Ben's cards, he remembers that he brought back a kitten to life as a child, only to have his mother panic, take it away, and drown it herself. She asks him what gift he's hiding, but he refuses to answer and stumbles out.
  • It's revealed that when his mother become ill, she wouldn't allow him to touch her, calling him "filth" and demanding he stay away.
